So after having done quite a bit of analysis through post, others people interviews and different reviews on the Bold and the Storm, I have been using myself the Storm for over 2 weeks now
My latest blackberry has been the Pearl for over 18 months (although I have gone through 4 models on this time). I was happy but the browsing experience has always been very poor and the device memory has given me trouble (lost my stored email and SMS on the device in average once every 2 months) and the device resistance was not too good, but overall it was a good product and a very good entry to non-corporate segment
Overall I think is a very good device but we are paying our hunger to have either an i-phone alternative or a good browsing compared with previous devices by getting the initial software generation of the Storm. Jury still out for me
So here is the Storm, my more detailed impressions as a user:
Good:
- Stunning screen resolution
- Good design (yes it is heavier than it looks but it really is a good compromise of size and features)
- I like the clickthrough function, although you need time to get used to it
- Browser has greatly improved from previous devices and it does really work well (although you may get dizzy with the zoom in and out functions)
- Phone functions work very well, love the conf call easiness to make it work
- I like that we finally can open word, powerpoint and excel (which obviously can't replace your laptop but becomes handy when things are urgent and you are on the move)
Getting used to or still under analysis:
It's hard to tell how fast I would be able to go once I am completely re-trained. It's a unique and finely tuned sensation, and I liked it, but I could definitely see people loathing it. I prefer to work on the keyboard as I did on the pearl. However I am much slower (I still used the pearl on heavy email days for work) and I have problems getting myself to edit text
- I am finding almost impossible to move my contacts from the pearl to the storm (this is key for an smooth transition) and in fact it should be something well explained on your manuals
- Applications are easy to install. However the application store is almost non-existent for the time being
- It does not have WIFI. I think this is not so important in Europe (as it is difficult to find WIFI hotsposts anyway and they are expensive) as people may favour 3G, but I believe this could be a dealbreaker in the US
- Bluetooth does not seem to work that well. However I will come back on this one after I try to hook up my Jaw Bone and the car bluetooth system
Bad (lots of room for improvement)
- Too Slow responding (tactile screen). This has not improved after my first firmware upgrade
- The accelerometer (it detects whether it's in landscape or portrait orientation) needs still a lot of work. Sometimes it is fast (even too fast) and sometimes it is frozen. I have read this was much improve with the new firmware release, but I have not noticed much improvement
- Firmware and overall device support: Why is Blackberry (and the operators working with the device Vodafone and Verizon) making it so difficult to find the new releases. Gentleman we understand this is software and it needs refinement. We are more than willing to have thing improving little by little, but let us learn from it, find it and make it easy to interact with you for feedback
- MAC support is almost non-existent. Please take into account I am sure many of the SME and entrepreneurs are using MAC Laptops but blackberry for email and the phone, so please help us not have to borrow a PC from somebody
A good complement to read is Matt Buchanan's Blog:
